Objectives
The main objective of the study was to investigate the distribution and
infection potential of Biomphalaria species of snails in the River Kochi and their
influence on the prevalence of schistosomiasis in human communities living along the river.
Specific objectives were to:
- Assess the effects of altitude and season both on the numbers of the
Biomphalaria species of snails
found in the river (infected and non-infected) and on infection rates within human communities along the river.

- Determine the influence of environmental variables such as water velocity, pH, temperature,
and TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) on the distribution of the Biomphalaria species of snails.
- Determine if the prevalence of schistosomiasis in humans varies with age and gender and with
the distance that they live from the river.
- Establish if a relationship can be determined between incidence of
infection in Biomphalaria species of snails and prevalence of infection in humans.
